These are very easy to make. They freeze well and are always a welcome addition at any gathering or event. This is a recipe that has withstood the test of time. I can remember my Great Grandmother making these when I was a child and here it is, four generations later and I am still making them and sharing the recipe with future generations.
Directions:
Yield: One 9″ x 12″ pan
- In a saucepan, combine dates and water. Bring to a boil, simmer, stirring constantly, until the consistency of jam is reached.
- Remove from heat. Stir in Vanilla and set aside.
- In a bowl, combine, flour, oats, brown sugar, salt and baking soda.
- Add melted Butter or margarine. Mix until combined.
- Press 2/3 of mixture in the bottom of a 9”x12” baking pan, lined with parchment paper.
- Top with date mixture. Spread evenly.
- Top with remaining crumb mixture and bake in preheated 350°F oven for approx. 20 minutes or until golden brown.
- Cool completely, remove from pan and cut into desired size squares or bars. Enjoy!

- One 500g Package of Pitted Dried Dates
- 1 and 1/2 cup of Water
- 2 tsps of Vanilla
Ingredients (Crust):
- 1 and 1/4 cup of Melted Butter or Margarine
- 1 and 1/2 cups of Brown Sugar
- 2 cups of All-purpose Flour
- 2 and 1/2 cups of Rolled Oats
- 1 tsp of Baking Soda
- 1/2 tsp of Salt
